Gerhard Seeliger


Gerhard Wolfgang Seeliger (born April 30, 1860 in Biala, November 24, 1921 in Leipzig) is a German historian.

He was born in Biala (now Bielsko-Biała) on the border of Austria and Galicia as one of eight children of local politician and social activist, long-time mayor of the city, Rudolf Theodor Seeliger. One of his brothers was astronomer Hugo von Seeliger. Seeliger's grave and his wife in the Leipzig cemetery From 1879 he studied economics and history at the University of Vienna, where he later moved to Berlin, where he obtained his doctorate in 1884. He habilitated from the history three years later in Munich, where he later lectured as a privatdozent.

In 1895 he became professor of medieval and modern history and auxiliary science of history at the University of Leipzig. He focused primarily on the history of Germany during the Middle Ages and the Reformation. During the work on the collection of Urkunden und Siegel in Nachbildungen für den akademischen Gebrauch (Documents and Seals for Academic Use) he cooperated with Albert Brackmann, Oswald Redlich and Friedrich Philippi.

In the academic year 1908/1909 he was the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, and in 1905-1906 he was rector of the Leipzig Academy. From 1898, he published the Historischen Vierteljahrsschrift (Historical Quarry), and in 1907 became the secretary of the court.

Married to Louise Stölzel, he had five children. He was buried at Leipzig's Southern Cemetery. Selected works Bibliography
