Degrowth
Degrowth (or degrowth movement, post-growth, post-growth idea) - a social, political and economic movement based on ecological economics, anti-capitalist ideas and anti-conservative.
The main postulate in the degrowth movement is the reduction of production and consumption. By analyzing the links between economic growth, environmental damage and social inequalities, the representatives of the mainstream argue that a model of global economic development based on unrestricted economic growth leads to environmental degradation and creates huge inequalities between the rich and the poor - and within individual societies. Degrowth advocates advocating a socio-economic model based on not economic growth and at the same time reducing consumption leads to a real increase in quality of life and wellbeing.
The French definition (décroissance) first appeared in the 1970s as part of the discussion accompanying the Rome Club Report "Growth Limits". At the beginning of the 21st century it emerged as a postulate of activists in France, Italy and Catalonia. The English term was adopted at the first conference on degrowth in Paris in 2008.
Degrowth is part of a broader line of exploration of alternative vision and development models, including buen vivir (or sumac kawsay or qamaña sum) in South America, South African ubuntu or sweden in India.
