Presidential election in Indonesia in 2014


The presidential election in Indonesia in 2014 took place on 9 June. These were the third free elections of the head of state in Indonesia. The winner of the election was from the Democratic Party of Indonesia - Fight, the then governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo. The Vice-President was Jusuf Kalla. Candidates and electoral coalitions

Due to changes in the electoral law of 2008, presidential candidates could only be exhibited by election parties and committees which held at least 20% of seats in the People's House of Representatives and those who won at least 25% of votes in the parliamentary elections organized in April the same. Finally, two candidates representing two electoral coalitions took part in the election. The candidate of the so-called The majority coalition (grouping such groups as Gerindra, Golkar, the United Party for Development, the Party of Prosperous Justice, the Party of the National Mandate, the Democratic Party, the Party of the Star and the Crescent) was Prabowo Subianto. The candidate of the so-called The Minority Coalition (which included the Democratic Party of Indonesia - Fight, the Party of National Awareness, the National Democratic Party, the Party of the National Awakening and the Indonesian Party of Justice and Unity) was Joko Widodo. A total of 133,594,277 valid votes were cast in the elections. Joko Widodo obtained the result of 70 997 833 (53.15%) votes, gaining the greatest support in such provinces as Bali (71.42%); West Celebes (73.37%); Southern Celebes (71.43%); Papua (73.16%). Prabowo Subianto won 62 576 444 (46.85%) votes, winning inter alia in such provinces as West Sumatra (76.92%); Small West Sunda Islands (72.45%) and in the largest province in terms of the number of West Java residents (59.78%).
