Rune stone from Stora Ek, front side
Stora Ek runic stone (Vg 4) - a runic stone located in Stora Ek in the municipality of Mariestad in the Swedish province of Västergötland.
Made of gray granite, the stone is 1.65 m high, 1.25 m wide and 0.1-0.2 m thick. It is dated about 970 years. The first information about it comes from the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when it was imprinted on the map of the parish Ek. The boulder is located near the old road to Mariestad, once part of the royal road, the so-called. "Erica Road" (Eriksgata). Since 1936 it is situated on a natural hill called Kungsbacken.
On the front side of the stone was engraved a riddle inscription with content (i) (r): (i) (s): (i) (i) (i) (a) (t) (i): (s): buia: i: homri * auk: triauku: mark: at: airiki
What it means: Udd skald raised this stone to Torsten, his father, and made a stone dike after him (ie his memorial). It left three villages, divided according to the rules of "hammarskipt" and thirty fine (in the fall) Eryk
The rear wall of the stone adorns the image of a lion with a size of 0.55 × 0.65 m. This animal represents the symbol of royal power and is found only on a few rune stones.
