George Finlay


George Finlay (born 21 December 1799 in Faversham, 26 January 1875 in Athens) is a British historian, columnist, and fillhelen. Curriculum vitae

He was educated at the University of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Göttingen. Through his friend Lord Byron, he became interested in the cause of Greek independence. He purchased a property near Athens and settled there permanently. For many years he served as correspondent for the London Times. A devotee of Greek culture, he wrote a monumental seven-volume work, A History of Greece, from the Roman Conquest to the Present Time (London 1877), which was the fruit of many years of labor, encompassing a great period from 146 BC.
