Plant supply material
Starch grains in potato tuber cells
Plant backup materials, supplementary substances - organic compounds collected by the plant and consumed at certain stages of development, eg during germination of seeds or during periods unfavorable for the plant's environmental conditions.
Organic compounds produced by photosynthesis only to some extent are consumed during metabolic processes, some of them are deposited and used at the right moment. In some cases, large amounts of spare substances can be stored in the storage organs of the plant.
Backup materials are collected in the cytosol and cell organelles. Every living cell has the ability to accumulate back-up substances. Usually, the function of storage tissue is performed by parenchymal cells.
Spare materials may be carbohydrates (glucose, sucrose, starch, inulin, hemicellulose), spare proteins (eg in the form of aleurone grains), fats. Most often, the reserve material is carbohydrates.
