Philanthropic

Philanthropists - movement in pedagogy, which formed in Germany in the second half of the eighteenth century. Movement was created to promote education in the lower social classes.

Johannes Bernhard Basedow, German pedagogue and theologian, representative of the pedagogy of the Enlightenment in Germany, inspired the views of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In addition to promoting education in the lowest social strata, the movement focused on setting up schools where the primary educational task was to educate children in love for man and nature. Physical education included the elements of proper physical development and the practical learning of work on the field or in the craft.

The first school, named Philantropinum, with a program in line with the philanthropist's ideas, was founded by Basedow in 1774 in Dessau. The next was founded in 1785 in Schnepfenthal, and its founder was Christian Gotthilf Salzmann. The philanthropist movement has played a role in shaping the pedagogical model not only in Germany.
