Charles Wesley Peters
Charles Wesley Peters (born 1889,?) is an American aviation pioneer who was named the first African American to pilot a plane and design and build his own plane. Curriculum vitae He was born in Virginia in 1889 as John's second son and Yemi Peters. His parents moved to North Carolina when Peters was four years old.
In his youth Peters was interested in the progress of aeronautics at that time. When in 1903 the Wright brothers made their first flight on a heavier machine, going out to the eccentric and insane 14-year-old Peters has already designed and built many kites, box kites and other winged machines. In 1906 he built a glider, in which he made his first flight of about a hundred yards (about 30 meters). After a successful glider flight, Peters began designing and in 1911 built his first plane. The engine was about 40 feet (13 meters) wide and powered by a car engine, Peters plane was in the air for twelve minutes. Peters' first machine burned down, but Peters built a second plane, though it is unknown whether his second construction ever got in the air.
