A Goya

Goya - a monument commemorating the Spanish painter Francis Goya (1746-1828). It was made in 1984 by an iron sheet by artist José González Vives. It is located in Barcelona's Eixample district.

The statue stands on a sloping square at the crossroads of the intersection of the Avenue de Roma, the streets of de Aragón and de Casanova, which also houses the fountain - the work of Frederic Marés Fuente del Gallo in 1925.

José Gonzalvo (1929-2010), like Goya, came from Aragon. He received an order for a monument to a painter, for he had already made his bust for the home town of Goi, Fuendetodos. The initiator and sponsor of the Barcelona sculpture was Centro Aragonés de Barcelona, a cultural center of the Aragonese people living in Barcelona. Hence, the inscription on the chalkboard reads: "Aragones F. Goi, 1984. Goa, World and Aragon, homage to a man who loved freedom and human dignity, Barcelona, June 1984». The monument was unveiled on 9 June 1984 by the mayor of Barcelona, Pasqual Maragalla.

The sculpture is made of an iron sheet, in an abstract style based on a geometric distribution of figures. Basic forms have been used, which produce intense light and shadow effects, indicating the influence of sculptors such as Julio González and Pablo Gargallo. The artist was shown with the attributes of his profession - a palette and a brush. On the pedestal is a figure from the image of Goi pt. Shooting of the Madrid insurgents - condemned in white shirt with raised arms in dramatic gesture. Two masks next to it symbolize the suffering of the people.
