Gianni Clerici

Gianni Clerici (born on July 24, 1930 in Como) - an Italian sports journalist, writer, tennis player.

In his youth he practiced tennis, achieving, among others, the finals of the Italian championships of juniors in singles and two titles of Italian junior champion in doubles; in 1950 he was a member of the team that reached for the Galea Cup. He competed in the international championships of France (later French Open) and at Wimbledon.

The work of a sports journalist brought him greater recognition. From 1956, he was a publicist and reporter of the Milan daily Il Giorno; since 1988, he publishes in the Roman daily "La Repubblica", and from 1960 in the pages of the weekly "L'Espresso". As a correspondent, he participated in over 170 Grand Slam tournaments. He has published over 6,000 articles on sports, as well as several well-known books, including 500 Anni di Tennis (1974, French, English, German, Japanese, Spanish), Il Vero Tennis (1965), Il Tennis Facile (1972). He is the author of the well-known biography of French tennis player Suzanne Lenglen - La Diva du Tennis (1984), which has a French version of the stage in Paris. In addition to the press, she acts as a tennis commentator on Italian TV.

Clerici also contributed to the popularization of tennis as a co-founder of the 2003 Open Roland Garros Tenniseum at the French Open arena. In cooperation with the Italian Tennis Federation, he is working on the opening of a tennis museum in Milan. He was awarded many times for his work, received, among others, Prix ​​Vallecorsi (1987, award for the arts of the year in Italy) and Penna d'Oro (1992, for the best Italian sports journalist). He also received the honorable mention of the Italian Olympic Committee (1998).
