1955 graduated from the State University of Yerevan and became secretary of the Komsomol Committee; in 1956 he joined the CPSU, 1958-1959 deputy head of the Armed Forces Division of the Armed Forces SRR, 1959-1962 First Secretary of the Komsomol Municipal Committee in Yerevan, 1962-1967 then 1st Secretary of the Armed Forces Armed Forces SRR, 1967-1978 First Secretary of the Armed Forces District Communist Party of Armenia, 1978-1988 Chairman of the Armenian State Committee for Radio and Television SRR, 1988-1990 Director of the Information Agency of the Armenian SRR Council of Ministers. From 30 November 1990 to May 1991 I Secretary of the Central Committee of the KPA. Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU, from December 11, 1990 to July 26, 1991 member of the Politburo of the CPSU. Awarded with the Order of the Red Labor Banner and the Order of Honor.
