Eugeniusz Berezowiec


Eugeniusz Berezowiec (born February 26, 1944 in Bielsk Podlaski, November 25, 2013) is a Polish self-government activist, Mayor of the City of Bielsk Podlaski from 2002 to 2013, member of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD).

He was the son of Alexander and Mary, the eldest of five siblings. He started as a vice-president of Bielsko Podlaski during Andrzej Stepaniuk's term of office. In the first direct elections in 2002, SLD was the rival candidate for Andrzej Stepaniuk's re-election, eventually defeating him with the support of the right-wing (Catholic) electorate against Stepanu, representing the Orthodox Ukrainian and Belarussian minorities. In the next election in 2006, he struggled for a seat with a representative of the Bielsko Coalition, Piotr Bożko, defeating him by a majority of 968 votes. In 2010, he was elected for a third term and died during his term as a result of a heart attack shortly after his mother died. As a mayor, he was criticized for being one of the best-paid mayors and presidents of cities in the Podlaskie voivodeship, in 2011, while he was in office only in 2008-2010, the city recorded record-high investments of over 7.2 million including new streets and sanitary channels. In 2004, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for outstanding contributions to the local community.

Eugeniusz Berezowiec's funeral service in the Orthodox rite took place at the Orthodox Church. Archangel Michael at ul. Mickiewicz, then was buried in the new cemetery at ul. Mickiewicza. Bibliography
