Ferdinand Bardamu, the author's alter ego, already known from the Journey to the end of the night, is a doctor in Paris. His patients are the poor who use him, rarely paying for his services, while he must be at their every call. The action is not continuous, but goes back to earlier memories and often enters the area of ​​fantasy, especially when it comes to Ferdynand's sexual escapades. In memories, the style is harsh, the sentences fall apart to convey the atmosphere of the everyday world of Paris tragedies, efforts to earn a living, diseases, including venereal, disgusting stories of families whose fate is governed by their own stupidity, malice, greed and greed. p>

In the Polish pre-war edition the first part was called "Childhood", the second was "Master Courtial". The first describes the childhood and youth of Ferdinand, the son of the shopkeepers, in Paris from 1900 to 1910. He is trying various professions, but he is not good for anything. Technical progress is contrasted with the failures of ordinary people unable to adapt to the new century, threatened by indebtedness and poverty. The second part describes the two years spent by the narrator as an employee of a chimerical scholar and publisher, a dreamer, a bit of Roger-Marina Courtial des Péreires' cheater. With a scholar and his wife, he takes part in an experiment on a farm in Picardy, where they want to revolutionize agriculture. It ends with failure. Title
