Alunelul

Alunelul - Folk dance of Romania and Moldavia originating from Oltenia region (Little Wallachia). Name

It is believed that the word Alunelul means "little nut". Linking a name to a vegetation can traditionally result from the fact that trees and shrubs are used as a refuge from invaders and appreciates them as a source of food. This word is also used in Romania as a man's name. According to Teodor Vasilescu, a Romanian expert on folk culture, dances rarely take names from flowers and plants except Floricica ("little flower"). Vasilescu thinks that Alunelu is a combination of the words "A lu Nelu", where Nelu is the name, so it would be "Nelu dance". Origin and development

Alunelul probably originated from ancient doodle dances associated with religious rituals or celebrations. Due to the geographical location of Romania, the development of cross-country dances continued during the Middle Ages, undisturbed by the influence of the countries west of the Carpathians.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, he was included in the curriculum in Romanian schools as the first native dances. He gained a lot of popularity after the Second World War. In the 50s and 60s he reached the USA.
