Multi-core processor

AMD Phenom II X4 840 Quad-Core Processor

Multi-core processor - A type of CPU with more than one physical core. This technology aims to increase processor performance, reduce power consumption, and more efficient simultaneous processing of multiple tasks.

Multicore processors are used not only in personal computers, but also in servers, game consoles (eg, Xbox, Playstation), and handheld devices such as ultrabooks, tablets, and smartphones.

The most popular CPUs are dual-core and quad-core (though the number usually goes up to 8, and in special executions up to 22). Intel has developed a multithreading technology, called Hyper-Threading, that is, one physical core emulates two. Multi-core processors have a multiplier, depending on the number of cores, of the cache.
