The area was formed in spite of long-lasting social disputes in 1947-1955 and is used together with the local hydroelectric power plant by the Électricité de France. At the bottom of the lake is the village of Tignes-le-Lac, which was inhabited by about 500 people. Every ten years, the EDF drops completely the water from the reservoir to maintain the dam.
