Lake Chevril
General view
Lac du Chevril - a reservoir in France, located in the Tarentaise Valley in Savoie. Remains of the village of Tignes-le-Lac
The area was formed in spite of long-lasting social disputes in 1947-1955 and is used together with the local hydroelectric power plant by the Électricité de France. At the bottom of the lake is the village of Tignes-le-Lac, which was inhabited by about 500 people. Every ten years, the EDF drops completely the water from the reservoir to maintain the dam. The event is a tourist attraction, as the remains of the settlement emerge from the mud - houses, walls, tree trunks, and even car wrecks. It is possible to walk the bottom of the old town. Refilling the lake's canopy takes about two months. Mass is celebrated at the Mass.
