Han Gan

He came from a poor family. He was brought up by Wang Weia, who paid for his education with the esteemed painter Cao Ba. He later wrote as a court painter of the emperor Xuanzong. He gained fame as a horse painter, who was able to give not only the physical appearance of a horse, but also his spirit. Few of his works survived. The most famous of them is the portrait of Xuanzong's favorite mountaineer, Zhaoyebaitu, currently in the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection in New York.
