Gwerful Mechain (15th century) - Welsh poet.
She was the only author writing in Welsh, from which she survived until the present times a larger number of songs. Little is known about her life. It is known that she came from Powys. She was born around the year 1460, and died around 1500. It is possible that her songs had some influence on the lyrics of Ann Griffiths. The poetry of Gwerful Mechain is diametrically diverse subject matter. The poet created both sophisticated religious lyricism, covered in traditional metric forms, as well as erudite erotic poems. Her often cited song is Cywydd y Cedor, or Praise of the Womb. Alfred Perceval Graves, publisher of Welsh anthology anthology, stated that Gwerful Mechain is Welsh Sappon. Bibliography
