It begins every year on November 25 (Day against violence against women) and ends on December 10 (Human Rights Day). It was launched in 1991 by the Women's Global Leadership Institute, part of the Center for Women's Global Leadership at Rutgers University.

In 2014, the campaign's flagship was: From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Let's Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women!
