Portland Club (London)

Portland Club - London Cardinals Club. In the club, the rules of the predecessors of bridge and zxzena were elaborated and codified. History

The club was formed in 1815 as the Stratford Club, was renamed the Portland Club in 1825. The Portland Club and the American Whist Club have developed and codified the rules of the game, from which the modern Bridge and Ozzen are derived. The first codified rules developed at the Portland Club date back to 1895, the 1903/2 zxzena, and the contemporary bridge, developed jointly with the Whist Club, from 1932.

Today, the obligation to set the rules for a sports bridge is a part of the World Bridge Federation, but the Portland Club is traditionally one of the parties involved in the process.

The contemporary Portland Club is located at 69 Brook Street, London, W1Y 2ER. Bibliography
