His father Nicholas I of Saint Omer was a participant in the fourth crusade. He received land in Beocja and married Margaret of Hungary, widow of King Thessalonica Boniface of Montferrat. Bela of Saint Omer received the name of his grandfather Beli III of the Hungarian king. In 1240 he married the daughter of Prince Aten Gwidon I de la Roche.
