Bacuch

Bacuch - peatbog within the village of Koniówka in the Lesser Poland voivodship, in the poviat of Nowy Targ in the commune of Czarny Dunajec. Geographically, it is located in the Orawsko-Nowotarska Basin. It is located at an altitude of 741 m among meadows and arable fields on the left side of Czarny Dunajec. The distance of the bog from this river is 400-500 m, but it does not belong to its basin. From the peat bog flows out the Ogrójcowy Potok located in the Black Sea basin, a few hundred kilometers away. Between the banks of the Czarny Dunajec River and the Bacuch peat mire, a watershed runs between the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea catchments.

A vast complex of peat bogs, swamps, marshes, marshy wetlands and swampy pine forests, stretching from Sucha Góra in Slovakia to Ludźmierz in Orawa, was called deserts or emptylands. After the glacier retreated, the area was a large pool of water and lake, which was gradually silted by sewage sediments that formed the influx of cones, at the same time it was subject to overgrowth, in which sphagnum moss had a large share. Peat formed from its dead remains. Overgrowing started about 10-11 thousand years ago. Annually about 1 mm of peat comes. The peatbog creates specific living conditions for plants. They are characterized by very acid reaction, high humidity and poverty of nutrients. In such conditions, specific plant species characteristic for bogs develop on the bog.

The Torfowiska Kotliny Orawsko Nowotarskiej is a unique area in Europe. It is planned to create here special protection areas under the name "Orawa-Nowotarskie Torfowiska". They are to cover an area of 8255.62 ha. The Bacuch peatbog is a raised peat bog. In the past peat was exploited there, as a result of which its dome was almost completely leveled. In the area of the former dome, however, characteristic peatbog vegetation has been preserved. The rare plants in the Carpathians grow here, among others swamp. The peat bog is privately owned, in order to apply its protection, agri-environmental payments are foreseen for the abandonment of management on it, maintenance and carrying out appropriate care treatments.
