Raimo Ilaskivi


Raimo Ilaskivi (born May 26, 1928 in Ruokolahti) is a Finnish politician, economist and local government official. 1979-1991 Mayor of Helsinki, Member of the Eduskunta, Member of the European Parliament for the fourth term. Curriculum vitae

He studied social and political sciences at the University of Helsinki, obtaining a doctorate degree in 1958. A long time researcher at this university, since 1959 as a lecturer. He has also held managerial positions in private companies, banks, business organizations and the Helsinki Stock Exchange.

He became involved in political activities within the National Coalition Party. In the years 1957-1979 he was a member of the Helsinki city council. From 1962 to 1975 he was a member of the Eduskunta. In 1979-1991 he was the mayor of Helsinki.

In 1994, he was unsuccessful in running for the presidency, receiving 15.2% of the vote in the first round. In 1996, after the accession of Finland to the European Union, he obtained the mandate of a Member of the European Parliament for the fourth term of office of the Parliament of the Fourth term, which until 1999 belonged to the Christian Democrats.
