Jan Gabal

Jan Gabalas (d. Ἰωάννης Γαβαλᾶς, d. c. 1250) - Byzantine aristocrat, ruler of Rhodes in about 1240 - about 1250. Curriculum vitae

He was the brother of Leon Gabalas. He assumed the authority of Emperor John III Duke Watatzes (1222-1254) and became his brother-in-law. In 1248, the island was captured by the Genoese. Thanks to the Nicene intervention (1249-1250), John regained his power. After his death (around 1250), the island was under the direct administration of the Nice Empire. The Gabalas remained in Byzantine service - there were several fleet commanders. Bibliography
