Wilhelm II of Montferrat

Wilhelm II (born 10th century - before 951 or before 967) - Marquis Montferrat as co-regent of his father Aleramo.

He was the eldest son of Aleramo from his first marriage to a woman of unknown origin. His grandfather Wilhelm I of Montferrat died between 961 and 967, but in 938 he handed over to Aleramo. At an unknown date after that date, Wilhelm II became his co-presenter. The monumental memorial document of 951 mentions the proto-nostre et quondam Gulielmi qui fuit filius et filiaster atque germanus noster seu parentum nostrum mercede, which some interpret as proof that Wilhelm II was dead at that time. Certainly he was not among the living when his younger brother Otto I in 967 assumed power as a koregent or alone. Between 967 and 991 it is unclear whether Aleramo still ruled or no longer lives - but it is known that there were no descendants of William II, who probably did not marry. The younger brother of the Marquis was Anzelm (died 999/1014), Marquis of Saluzzo and Vasto. Bibliography
