Single-strand DNA binding protein

Prokaryotic Single Stranded Binding Protein (SSB) protein - a protein that, after de-weaving the DNA helical helix through a helicase, attaches to single-stranded DNA preventing re-association of the strand, thus the de-weeded strand is available for the DNA polymerase that it requires single-stranded DNA as a template for DNA replication.

These proteins have a tetrameric structure.

In eukaryotic counterparts of SSB proteins are RPA (Replication Protein A) proteins.
