On February 12, along with Friedrich Guggenberger (former U-513 commander), he quickly attempted a foiled attempt to escape to Mexico. Maus was also a participant in the preparations for the next escape at the end of December of the same year, during which 25 German prisoners escaped from the camp through a secretly dug tunnel. Sam, however, did not participate in it because of a hernia he contracted during digging.
Transported in 1946 to the British occupation zone, he was released from captivity. After the war, he became a successful entrepreneur.
